Many of the flowers that appear in this book are common throughout the region, provided suitable habitat exists. Those that grow at higher elevations can be found only in the mountains, those that require their roots wet, only beside rivers and lakes. We have tried to arrange the photographs according to the usual habitat for that particular plant. Those who set out to see for themselves will find that most of the flowers presented in a particular alpine valley can be found in the others also and flowers that may appear under the heading “hedgerows” may equally well be found blooming happily in a grassy meadow or on a patch of waste ground.

This book combines descriptions of places we have walked with information about flowers that may be found along the way. The journey starts at the coast near Fermo, capital of the province since June 2004 This is a fine old city, its origins stretching back to pre Christian times. The town is pleasantly unspoiled, but a wealth of treasure awaits the explorer. The Piazza del Popolo is both unusual in its irregular shape and beautiful. It is delightfully peaceful in the evenings when traffic is banned and one can enjoy a relaxing aperitif at one of the al fresco bars. The fine old Pinacoteca houses a small but interesting collection of the work of lesser-known Marche artists and a complete seventeenth century library. The “Romolo Spezioli” public library is housed in one of the most elegant buildings in town and beneath the pavements lie amazingly well preserved cisterns built by the Romans in the centuries before Christ. The Cathedral at the pinnacle of the town was beautifully restored for the Jubilee in 2000. The fine umbrella pines which grow around it are visible from many miles away.

The journey continues through a countryside scattered with hundreds of hilltop towns; all different and almost all worth a visit. The city of Amandola, at the base of Monte Amandola, lies at the entrance to the Sibillini, and in this section will be found many of the flowers that grow in the meadows, the woodlands and the hedgerows. There follow impressions of the different river valleys and gorges that cut into the Sibillini and the area known as “Colli”, the hills, just south of the Ambro. Here the views are excellent, and flowers abound. Lastly the area to the north around Bolognola and the Valle del Fargno is described and the windswept plateaus where, at the right time of the season, carpets of flowers may be found. La pintura di Bolognola, and I Piani di Ragnolo are unique. Orchids exist in such abundance that an entire section of photographs is devoted to them. Finally, as a postscript, some of the autumn flowers are included.
